Hi Everybody!

First off I would like to thank T.K. for all of her hard work on the newsletter. She did a Great Job and helped me out in times of need. Once again, "Thank You, T.K."

In November we had the Tattered Flag Run. We renewed some old members and one new member. Paul R. joined our merry group and went on the Tattered Flag Run. Not only did he win the $26 side pot but he also won the flag for 6 months. Congrats Paul! Ask Mailman what belt to buy. May 19, 2007 will be the next run. You can read about the run and view some pictures of it too on our Tattered Flag page.

The Chapter will host the January B.O.D. at the Lakewood Moose Lodge on Saturday January 13, 2007 at 11:00 AM. All members are welcome and if you would like to see how this organization works this is a good chance for you. You need to buy your own lunch and/or dinner, but come out and enjoy. You will find a couple of maps to the location on our calendar page.

Today was the Olympia Toy Run and what a turn out! That was one of the biggest Toy Runs I've seen. After the run the Chapter met up at FatSo's and we had the drawing for our Toy Run. The total was $3928, and half of it, $1964, went to the very lucky winner. The other half will be used to purchase gifts for the Tacoma YWCA Women's Shelter. That means 3,928 tickets at $1 apiece were sold by volunteers from our Chapter!

Lyle pulled the winning ticket and called the number on it - or so he thought that was the number. He got an answering machine and left a message, "You've won the 50/50". He found out he called the wrong number. Then he called back to inform that person they didn't win. OOPS, TOO FUNNY. A customer of Windy's won the pot and his name is J.R. - Congrats J.R.! Thank you to ALL for your hard work on this project. The Chapter THANKS YOU. Next up is our Toy Run on December 9th. Hope you all have a GREAT CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR.

Till Next Time,
Jay Frazier

Hi Everybody!

I'm sorry to report that two people have passed away within ten days of each other. October 20 Fred DePasquale passed away of cancer. Fred owned The Pla Mor Tavern in Kent for forty years and was the the first stop on last years Dice Throw Run. He said in the forty years he'd been there, he had never seen a bigger turn out of bikes at that Tavern. Fred was Fred, a GREAT guy, a GREAT friend to Pam and I. He will be missed. Thank you for making last year’s Dice Throw Run what it was.

On October 30 Karen Bolin passed away of cancer. What can I say about this GREAT Woman. Karen has accomplished more for motorcycling then I can even imagine. I remember the first Freedom Run I was on. She spoke to the crowd of people and I can still see and hear what she said that day;

"Legislators may come and go but we bikers will never go away."
Thank You, Karen. You will be missed.

As for Chapter business, not much going on as was apparent from the November business meeting attendance. We have the Toy Runs coming up and the Chapter will meet at Bailey's in Lacey on Highway 99 December 2nd at 11:00 for breakfast for the Olympia Chapter Toy Run. For the Tacoma Chapter Toy Run on December 9th we will meet at The Haven at 10:00 for breakfast and leave at 12:30.

Jan Heckathorn's helmet ticket was dismissed, but cost her $52 for court costs and a half day's vacation pay. The Tattered Flag was won by Paul, a new chapter member. He also won the cash pot. Welcome aboard Paul!

Till Next Time,
Jay Frazier

Hi Everybody!

Thank you Blender for all you have done for Tacoma Chapter. (For those of you who didn't know, Blender stepped down from her positions in the chapter.) You have always been willing to help out when asked, as Chapter Ambassador, Safety and "Web Editor". A coordinator could always count on you for support. I thank you for all your hard work, the sweetheart pictures and dedication. You will be missed.

Note: If it weren't for Blender, Tacoma Chapter wouldn't have this website. She reached out by coming to my home many times to develop it, always bringing with her the spirit of cooperative effort. Thank you for reviving the website and breathing new life into it, Blender. You are gifted with foresight and patience.
- Helen Wolfe, Webmaster

As for the Chapter news, the officers are now Peggy Miller - Secretary, Bruce Ramsey - Treasurer, Windy Blum - Deputy Coordinator, and Jay Frazier (myself) - Coordinator. We need to fill the Safety and Ambassador positions and if anyone is interested in Road Captain, I would appreciate someone stepping up to the plate. Also Tacoma's Halloween Party is set for The Haven Tavern (125th & Pacific Ave, Tacoma) on October 28th.

Recently on KOMO 4 News, Connie Thompson wrote an article on mandatory insurance for motorcycles and Ken Schram had to add his two cents on the 28th in his commentary. Both of their reports can be read on this website. Just click on the button at the top of this page. The web address where each can be found on the KOMO 4 website appears under the titles if you'd like to go there to read them. I'm sure we will be dealing with this on Black Thursday January 18, 2007. Hope to see you there.

Jay Frazier

Tacoma Chapter's Election Results

September 6th, 2006

And the Winners Are ...

Many thanks to our officers for stepping up to volunteer to help keep the chapter running smoothly. A special thanks to outgoing secretary Colleen who conceded the position to first-termer Peggy Miller. Colleen served the chapter well for two terms and deserves a big atta-girl for her efforts. And many thanks to Peggy for volunteering. Jay and Windy are both beginning their third terms as officers, and Bruce, well, he's been treasurer / membership for as long as we can remember. Be sure to express your gratitude to these folks for their commitment the next time you see them.

One item of note: The chapter voted to have a thousand business cards printed which can be handed out to prospective new members. If you are interested in obtaining some of these cards, contact an officer.

September 2006

Hi Everybody!

Gee what a fast summer. It's football season already and time to start thinking about Halloween. The Tacoma Chapter will be having a party at the Haven Tavern on the 28th of October, so keep an eye out for the flyer. I would like to Thank Jim and Robin Cole, Mike and Lesta Campbell for a Great trip to Sturgis and most of all to Mac, Renee, Kelly and the other girl who sang Happy Birthday to Mailman at breakfast - oh yeah Frankie. Pam and I had a GREAT time and we are looking forward to next trip. I was told what happens in Sturgis stays in Sturgis so all I can say is man they have REALLY BIG RAIN DROPS. There is one thing I must tell you and that's Randy Coble crashed in Yellowstone National Park and avoided hitting a 14 year old on a bicycle who made a left turn in front of Randy. The bike is totaled but he is O.K. Some road rash and a funny spot on the end of his nose that makes me think about Christmas.

Now for August 19th. What a busy day for the Chapter. Lyle Coyle attended the B.O.D. for us as I had a wedding to attend and Windy was on his return trip from Sturgis. I don't have the complete report as yet but the NCOM issue was rejected and Lyle withdrew the Chapter motion about State expenses - it still needs some work.

Also on the 19th, Mailman put together and headed The Memorial Run for the Chapter. (His full report is just below this one.) I would like to Thank all the Businesses that helped out with this event and I hope everybody had a good time. Thank you for your Support. I'm not sure what happened at the start of the run but it seems the Thunderbird does not want our business as the Tribal Police were called by the manager of the Thunderbird (over our products table in the parking lot!). That's what's nice about Tacoma, there is more than one place who wants our business. When planning runs in the future I will keep this in mind.

Way to go Tim Wilkins on winning the Beckler art work and Thank you Mike and Debbie Beckler for the GREAT DONATION. Thank you Jerry and Pam Otto for the hard work and time you spent on this project and to ALL WHO HELPED with selling tickets. The Chapter really appreciates it.

Till Next Time,
Jay Frazier

18th Annual Clayton Memorial Run

held August 19, 2006

The Clayton Memorial Pin and Year Bars The 18th Annual Clayton Memorial for Fallen Brothers and Sisters took place on a beautiful, warm, sunny Saturday, the 19th of August, 2006. Never got an accurate attendance count, what with the coming and going, early leaving, late arriving, and generally independent nature of the participants, but I'm guessing around 65 or so. The start at the Thunderbird lounge, stops at Kapowsin, Beam's Firehouse, Naches in Greenwater, City Hall in Cumberland, and finish at the Right Spot in Fife, made for a great ride on mostly rural roads with ample time for socializing and re-hydrating and not-too-long stretches in the saddle in between. I liked that people rode in small groups at different times, eliminating the safety and liability concerns of riding in a large pack.

The optional card "game" had 63 entrants who each donated $5 to the pot, all of which was returned to the best hand (50% of pot), 2nd (30%), and worst hand (20%). Game winners were Shirley with an ace/king-high flush, Paulette with an ace/queen-high flush, and Mailman with ace, 2, 3, 4, 6 low score.

The raffle ticket was drawn for the motorcycle art sculpture, generously donated by the extraordinary welder, Mike Beckler. Tim Wilkins was the lucky winner of this unique piece. There were 129 raffle tickets sold which raised $645 - Thank You, Mike! And a big Thank You to all the folks who sold tickets.

We observed a moment of silence to reflect on the purpose of this run which is to remember those who have "gone on ahead". Everyone seemed to enjoy the run. I know I certainly did.

July 4th in Roy

July 2006

On the 4th of July the Chapter helped out the town of Roy with their celebration. Thank You Jim Cole for all your hard work. About 30 bikes from South King County, EPCC (East Pierce County Chapter) and the Tacoma Chapter left The Silver Dollar Bar after breakfast for Roy. Great job on the breakfast too. The Silver Dollar always does a Great Breakfast. We followed The Hollywood Stunt Riders in the parade. WOW, what a show those guys put on. Between the stunt riders show and everything else going on in town, we put on the bike games. The winners are listed below and so are the winners from the games held at Spring Opener in June.

Thanks to one and all for your help and the big turn out.

ABATE of Oregon's 29th Annual Fossil Campout

Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-29, 2006
ABATE of Oregon's Fossil Event Pin

Only a half dozen Tacoma Chapter members plus 4 or 5 guests made Fossil this year,  which was still enough to get the largest out-of-state MRO trophy. Lyle and myself went via Snoqualmie Pass and only hit around 5 miles of light rain on the way there. The others, who went down I-5, got soaked. We made camp in the usual place, up the hill by the "Tacoma Tree", which has a commanding view of the entire rally site. This was the 11th consecutive year that we camped at "The Tree".

The Tacoma Tree sign carved by Mailman a couple of years back. Picture courtesy of Robin Cole Most of the weekend involved sitting around under the cover of Lyle and Debby's gazebo, watching the wood burn in their Coleman fireplace, and watching the rain fall. We didn't even go into town to play bike games, nor did we do the 135 mile poker run, which 50 other people did do. We drank beverages of choice, listened to music, and watched the rain fall. Sure, we walked around between squalls and socialized at other camps, especially our friends' from Lincoln County, Oregon (aka Tacoma Chapter South), but mostly we watched and listened to the rain fall. Some might say it really sucked, but I really enjoyed it. Friends, music, beverages, campfire, shelter and rain. Wasn't nothin' else happnin' I'da rather done that weekend, so I'm calling it a total success.

May 2006

Hi Everybody!

The Dice Throw Pin since 1994WOW! What a turn out for the May 13th Dice Throw Run.   130 score sheets were turned in and Ryan Gatty was 1st with 50 points, Sonny Boy and Mick Gillispie were tied for 2nd with 47 points but had a roll off with Sonny Boy in 2nd, Mick in 3rd and Moe Man taking worst score with 21 points. Lenny, owner of the Right Spot "Most Supportive" went to Beam's Firehouse. The $490 50/50 drawing was won by Lenny, owner of The Right Spot (pictured left), and he donated every penny of it back to the Chapter! So we made $980 on the 50/50, $244 on the raffle, and $1165.18 on admissions.

Thank you  Lenny and crew at the Right Spot. And Thank You to all of those people who helped on the run and to you folks who supported it. To the folks that showed up at The Silver Dollar and did not get a map, I'm sorry you didn't get one. The plan was to leave 5 maps at the Bar but we ran out twice.

The May 2006 Tattered Flag Run started at Bob's Pier in Tacoma. 11 members left Bob's at 11:00 and headed to Elbe so we could catch up with EPCC (East Pierce County Chapter) in their "Mystery Run". We were 20 minutes late, so after some refreshments, on to Onalaska, EPCC's third stop. Click for more about The Righteous Relic, the Tacoma Chapter Tattered Flag At this point we joined the Mystery Run and Tim Wilkins, who was already on their run, made his try for the Tattered Flag and the side pot of $2 per person. Then on to Tenino and The Landmark Tavern. The last stop was at the Kapowsin Tavern and Will Hansen won the Flag for the next 6 months. Congrats Will on the win! Mike Campbell split the $100 for 1st place on the Mystery Run, and boy did we clean up on the raffle. Way to go Tacoma Chapter! Lyle Coyle met up with us at Kapowsin and he made his donation to the pot, then his wife Debby won the $26 side pot. To top it all off, we logged a bunch of "In-the-Wind" miles.

By the way ... Chapter Elections are just around the corner in September, so if you are interested in holding an Officer's position please feel free to put your name in the hat. Because the chapter takes a "summer vacation" from the normal monthly business meeting in August, nominations take place at the July meeting. However, last minute nominations can be made at the September meeting.

Thanks!
Jay Frazier
Tacoma Chapter Coordinator
