TACOMA CHAPTER A.B.A.T.E.

Tacoma Chapter's
28th Annual Toy Run
held December 8, 2007

Merry Christmas Everyone!

December 18th ... Deb Coyle just received a check in the amount of $8,000 from the Puyallup Tribe of Indians Charity Trust as a donation to the Tacoma Chapter Toy Run beneficiary, the Tacoma YWCA Women's Shelter. Tribal elder Nina Landry awarded Deb the check in person with a reporter present from the Tacoma Weekly. She took the check to the Shelter in person which evoked what Deb described as, "a very emotional response".

I want to thank everyone who sold and bought tickets. If it wasn't for all of you we wouldn't have a Toy Run. This year we raised $4,022 from our raffle, half of which, $2,011, went toward the purchase of items from the wish list that the shelter provided us. The other half was divided three ways by the winners; Craig from South Prairie won $670, Philas (Rob LaVergne’s mother-in-law) from Spanaway won $670, and Tom from Parkland was the third winner. CONGRATS to the winners.

We also had businesses donate cash to us. I would like to say THANK YOU! to Fred Meyer (Puyallup) $50, Looker $200, Taurus Industries $100, Fred Meyer (Auburn) $75, Fred Meyer (Federal Way) $100, AABCO Barricade $300, Kathy Dehart $100, Diane (my hair salon) $50, Fred Meyer (James Center) $100, Wal-Mart (Federal Way) $375, and Wal-Mart (Auburn) $1,250.

Again a BIG Thank You. Hope you all have a great holiday. Hope everyone made it to the Toy Run to see how your money and time was spent. It makes you walk away with a good feeling.

The day couldn't of been more perfect. The sun was shining, we had a great turn out and we made a lot of kids and their moms so happy. You gave truck loads of toys and gift cards and the final cash count was $545!!!! I will purchase strollers and car seats and if there is anything left over, more gift cards.

THANK YOU EVERYONE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

As you continue working your miracles this is a story that came in from a fellow employee that I wanted to share with you.

I am NOT a toy!!!

Jennine:
Last night I was presenting to families living in Shalishan housing. After class, a woman who had been in the Insights Support Groups and had stayed at the shelter from Nov of 05 to April of 06 came up to talk to me. She said that she had really enjoyed the support groups and had her handouts still. She said that what her kids remember most though out of everything else is the day the bikers came and brought all the toys. She said they talk about it still and were bummed out that this Christmas they were not going to get to have the cookie party with the bikers or go shopping for each other in the Santa’s Shopping Center that the Y sets up with all the toys from the Biker Run. She said, repeatedly, that the kids talk about it all year and she said to tell them all THANKS! It meant so much to them!

YWCA Women's Shelter Gets a Playground

February 7, 2008

Here's another update everyone. I know it's almost spring and we're still talkin' Toy Run. Anyway, the kitchen idea went south, the shelter felt a new playground would benefit more and longer. So with the $8,000 I bought a Rainbow play set. That was over $6000, then we needed pea gravel to go under it so we were lucky to have Miles Sand and Gravel donate it to us. We need a special kind of truck to deliver the gravel because the playground sets down in a hole and there's no access to it except stairs. So once the gravel is down, the playground can be installed. After that a few tables, maybe some flowers, and we will be done. I'm hoping to be able to have like a ribbon cutting thing and have all of you guys show up on the bikes, the kids just love us. Also the Tacoma Weekly wants to write a story about this so I'm sure there will be pictures taken for you hams out there. Signing off for now but keep checking back for updates.

Thanks,
Debby Coyle
