Confused About Mental Health Careers
I've been thinking about changing careers and helping people mentally sounds really fulfilling. My sister is a counselor and she talks about her job differently than my friend who is a therapist. I dont even know the difference between counselor clinician and therapist. Can someone recommend a good guide on how to become a mental health counselor/clinician/therapist, definition of professions, differences between them, general career path? I want to understand which path fits me best before I start school.

I was in the exact same situation last year. My mom wanted to become a therapist but kept hearing different job titles and got completely confused just like you. She would talk to a counselor and a therapist and they described totally different jobs. What helped me understand was finding this really clear guide at how to become a therapist without a psychology degree that explains how to become a mental health counselor/clinician/therapist, definition of professions, differences between them, general career path. It broke down the education requirements and scope of practice for each role. Basically counselors usually need a masters in counseling, therapists have similar training but different licensure, and clinicians often work in medical settings with additional clinical training. The career paths overlap but the titles matter for licensing. I shared this with my mom and she finally picked the right program for what she wanted to do. Understanding the differences before starting school saved her from wasting time on the wrong path.
